Department of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography About two-thirds of the surface (actual, 71%) of the Globe is covered by ocean which contains 97% percent of the Earth's water and Bangladesh got the maritime boundary of more than 118,813 sq. km area of territorial sea and 200 nautical miles of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This area of the Bay of Bengal is blessed with rich coastal and marine ecosystems, supporting both industrial and artisanal fisheries. Therefore, the Department of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (MFOG) has been established under the Faculty of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Science in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University to deliver quality education and conduct leading-edge research related to the interactions among marine biota, fisheries, and the marine environment. The courses of MFOG are basically designed to provide comprehensive knowledge to the undergraduate (B.Sc.) and graduate (MS) students about the fisheries and bioresources of the marine environment and how it relates to physical, chemical and geological oceanography. As an interdisciplinary discipline, MFOG offers theoretical and practical courses on physical, chemical, geological and biological oceanography, coastal and marine ecology, pollution, planktology, marine fisheries management, hydrodynamics, mathematics, meteorology and geography in marine context. The vision of MFOG is to be at the forefront of generating knowledge and understanding about the ocean through theoretical explanation, practical observation, concept development, modeling and technological innovation. The department pledges to contribute the knowledge of marine science in exploring and utilizing the marine fisheries and resources for the sustainable blue economy.
