Nearly two‑thirds of our planet—about 71% of the Earth’s surface—is covered by oceans, which hold 97% of the Earth’s water resources. Following the settlement of maritime boundaries, Bangladesh now possesses over 118,813 square kilometers of territorial sea and enjoys sovereign rights over 200 nautical miles of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Bay of Bengal. This vast marine domain is endowed with exceptionally rich coastal and marine ecosystems that sustain both industrial and artisanal fisheries. Recognizing the immense potential of these marine resources, the Department of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (MFOG) was established under the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science at Sher‑e‑Bangla Agricultural University (SAU). The department is dedicated to delivering high‑quality education and conducting cutting‑edge research on the dynamic interactions among marine organisms, fisheries, and the marine environment. The courses of MFOG are primarily designed to provide comprehensive knowledge to undergraduate (B.Sc.) and graduate (MS) students about the fisheries and bioresources of the marine environment, as well as their relationship to physical, chemical, and geological oceanography. As an interdisciplinary discipline, MFOG offers theoretical and practical courses on physical, chemical, geological and biological oceanography, coastal and marine ecology, pollution, planktology, marine fisheries management, hydrodynamics, mathematics, meteorology, and geography in the marine context. The vision of the Department is to be a center of excellence in marine science education and research, leading in the generation of knowledge and fostering a deeper understanding of the ocean through theoretical insight, practical observation, conceptual innovation, advanced modeling, and emerging technologies—ultimately empowering sustainable exploration and utilization of marine resources for the blue economy.
